How to separate sound from avi files??

Hi my son is looking for a way to separate or covert the sound from an avi video that he took on a digital camera. Needs to be to wav or mp3 as he wants to edit the soundtrack. Must be free and no dodgy sites please.Hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance Ronnie

Not sure if Windows Movie Maker can do it - most can and export to MP3. If you're only doing it once or twice a trial version of Vegas can be downloaded. You are restricting yourself by stating FREE and NOT DODGY you know...

Do you have a torrent application such as BitLord or similar. If you have you can download the torrent for Vegas from HERE if you haven't got the torrent application to download you can get that from HERE. Please note - I can not be held responsible for anything dodgy you get when downloading... that is your responsibility!

Steve

Super.

It's free and will convert most audio and video formats. It has an option to "ignore video" so you can convert just the audio (vice versa just the video and not the audio)

It's tricky to find the download link....So it's here!!

Hope that helps

Thanks Hellfire he is going to try movie maker. I have bitlord on my computer but we are at my father in laws just now thats why i am trying to avoid anything dodgy just now. My son is 16 and can do some realy clever stuff on a computer but this is the first time he has needed to work with an avi file.

Cheers Ronnie and Sons

Thanks McLannahan that looks like the thing. And thanks to anybody else that doesn't have a yellow car avatar

I have used a small patch lead to connect the speaker out to the line in on the sound card and just used windows sound recorder to record whilst the movie is playing.

Can be a faf ensuring volume is just right, but once done is dead easy and locost!

Rich

What you're trying to do is Demux the audio and the video. Virtualdub will do it (get the MOD version as it will handle MPEG streams), else DGIndex will do it (my preferred choice). You could also use TMPGenc (demux hidden under File>Mpegtool)....

Seems a shame to get such a big DL as Vegas just to do a demux...
