Spam E Mail help please
Can someone help me please.
I'm receiving a vast number of spam E Mails at the moment.
I have an Orange (freeserve) E Mail account and a broadband connection with another provider, I'm using windows XP and MS Outlook 2003 as my
software.
Now the E Mail problem, I'm receiving lots of Spam, often the same spam multiple times, when checking it (not opening attachments) it has a
strange E Mail address. eg if my E Mail address is Frank@locostbuilders.com, the address might be XXXXX@locostbuilders.com, with XXXXX being any old
letters.
I seem to recall a previous thread saying something about changing "catch all" settings, have done a search, but can't find it.
I'm using the Orange "anti spam" which is filtering a lot out but there is still a lot coming through, recently a load from
"Royal Bank odf Scotland" I've blocked them but they just keep coming
Can someone please give some advice.
Many Thanks
Frank

I installed K9 it's free and works perfectly.
It needs a bit of "training" to start with, but after a couple of days it catches 100% of spam (at least it does mine).
I get around 10-20 spam emails per day, but I never see 'em.

Mailwasher is the one to use. So easy, and it's free to download.

I've just installed Thunderbird as I was getting sh!te in Outlook Express from different places all the time with the same symptoms as you. It
imports your settings from OE and treats everything as spam till you tell it otherwise then it allows the mails you mark as not spam and sends the
rest to junk folder. Check the junk and make sure you don't want any of it and set it to delete junk on closing the program.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Get SpamAware from http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml
Its free and is based on (uses) SpamAssassin which you simply can't beat.
TreeSize Free is also pretty good whilst you're there.

Change your email address! use googlemail this has really good spam filters. DON't use any microsoft web product to access or log on to this
account and don't EVER use the new address for anything that might remotely save and distribute your address. Leave the old address working and
use it for registering to websites.
Good luck!

Why can't the isp's sort out this problem, we pay enough for the net don't we, surely they just need to back track some of these
mails and jail the senders, people would think twice about sending out such poo then !!

Blocking senders is like widdling in the ocean, it doesn't help at all. The spammers can just make up addresses as they go along (in fact so can
anyone, you can put what you like in the reply-to field of an email, doesn't have to be at all related to who actually sent it), and don't
use the same address for very long at all so the chances of you getting two from the same address are close to nil.
I've been using POPFile for years now. It used to be fantastic, but in recent times I find it takes longer to train as spammers get more used to
trying to avoid bayesian filters. Once it's got a good bit of learning done it does work very effectively though

Thanks for the replies.
I will possibly try one of those pieces of software.
What I would prefer is to just set my E Mail to only allow mails to (for example)Frank@locostbuilders.com, and reject or filter ones to
"jrqvp@locostbuilders.co" or "sxcfh@locostbuilders.com"
Is this possible?

Yip, just change your email account from a "catch-all" to just a single account in the name of frank.
Or, leave it how it is, and set an inbox rule in outlook/oe to junk any emails not to frank@.....

Some ISPs are a lot better than others on this but they are under constant attack recently Plusnets mail server got well and truely hacked, Although
I no longer use them as an ISP I retain a couple of email accounts with Zen and practically no spam gets through their filters.
K9 is is the way to go if want to retain Outlook/Outlook Express, it is very easy to install
Thunderbird spam filter is also very good and it is more secure in otherways than the MS product.
K9 and Thunderbird can be used together but it takes a bit of manual configuration and won't work with some Email accounts

It's something that's set at the ISP end on the mail server, so how you do it will depend on the ISP. Some let you do it by logging into
your account on their webpage, others you'll have to phone up and spend 3 hours trying to explain to a call centre muppet in Eritrea what you
want doing.
If you do have some kind of online control panel look for a setting for an admin/postmaster email address. If you can't actually set it up to
not accept invalid addresses you may be able to setup a new email account and divert all the crap to that instead, and then you'd have to just
periodically clear it all...

Disable the catch all address option at your domain name host.
Also K9 (or Thunderbird) will do it if trained to do so.

In OE it'll need a bit of a cludge as it can't do "not = to:x"
But...
Tools, Message Rules, New
Untick anything which is already ticked.
In the top box, "select the condition...", set that to "Where the to line contains people".
Then in the bottom box (Rule description), click the "contains people" link, and select yourself from your address book, or type in your
email address for this account.
Then in the 2nd box (Select actions...), select "Move it to the specified folder". In the bottom box again, click the
"specified" link and then on the "Local folders" click, "New Folder", called "Inbox Clean". Click
OK.
Give the rule a Name and click OK.
Now all your good mail will be in "Inbox Clean". All your spam will be in "Inbox".
If you use Outlook you can it properly to junk all the mail not to you.
