Tuesday computer wibbling

What does the average computer user do with their computer?

I ask 'cos I've been doing some CPU benchmark testing and found that my PC is pants.

But yet I can quite happily have 10 open office documents / spreads open simulataneously whilst surfing the web and listening to some mp3s... It crunches a bit doing rendering of digital video editing but then apparantly Adobe Premiere does that even with the shiniest new computers!!! [bloatware]

So it appears my computer is the slowest of the slow. But why uprgrade (unless you're doing something like digital video editing)? Isn't it a bit like 90% of the people sat in the traffic on the M25 being in Veyrons?

Even if a Quad-core computer is 10* faster than mine, why bother when the majority of people just listen to mp3 maybe watch a DVD and check e-mail?

Also, when XP is such a bottleneck, isn't it like running a Veyron on Ron90 whilst using budget retread tyres???

I could understand if everyone was doing complex partical physics or structural analysis. But I very much doubt it!!!

Oh well! Wibble over

I play lots of games and do lots of video work and photo rendering.

Operating system: Vista x64
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Memory: 2Gb Geil
Graphics Card: 8800GTS 640
Motherboard: Abit P5N32-E
Sound Card : E-mu 1820
Power Supply: Corsair 620W
HDD(S): Samsung 500Gb

I agree that too many people upgrade when they have a PC that will do everything they need it to (emails, web etc) My last pc couldn't run many of the games I play now which is one of the reasons I upgraded. Another reason is that I like to build my own computers (used an ammo crate, car radiator and a pond pump or this pc) CPU idles at 13C so it's a sound cooling system for when I want to OC

same here lots of gaming on the pc need a good set up to sniper the opposition in the head from so far away that they cant even see you on there lameo machine lol if you cant play it on full graphic settings its time to upgrade. but for normal every day use I don’t see the point in buying a Ferrari to do to the weekly shop! I also do a lot of building service layouts on cad but that doesn’t need the spec machine you need to play games. You could buy a new machine to use every day and use your old one for downloading music and movies ect just keep it chugging away and get the most out of your internet connection without clogging up your new pc.

pics of battlefield 2142 if anyone plays it pm me your name and ill add you as a friend :p im a geek to lol

I've got a similar spec to Benzine's beasty and upgraded from my old P4 simply to keep up with the technology - just in case its needed. I've been doing this right from the old Sinclair ZX days, through to Commodore, BBC, Atari, 286, 386, 486 etc etc. I suppose you could call me a bit of a nerd, but then why do we build cars which are capable of vastly exceeding the speed limit when a Fiat 500 would do the job?

Although I used to be heavily involved in audio editing and CAD, these days I mainly burn DVDs, a bit of CAD, and of course checking in here occasionally

On the down side, I just tried to load Autocad 2008 and its not compatable with Vista64

Serves me right for being a nerd I suppose .....

I'm reading this on an old Athlon 1ghz machine that I've built from bits I've been given and running Mepis linux downloaded free of charge, just because I can. My wife's computer broke so I put her HDD into my other computer to keep her quiet and I can't be bothered to sort another one out yet but I have enough parts to make a 2800+ Athlon which was all donated by people chasing the latest technology. Keep up the good work lads

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
