Doesn't sound awfully like a virus to me - sounds more like a heat problem or memory module loose.
Shame I'm not nearer or I would have sorted it for you....

Never tried it, but worth downloading/burning and booting this CD http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/bitdefender_2008_RescueCD_v2.iso
Or
http://ftp.iasi.roedu.net/mirrors/ftp.bitdefender.com/pub/Live/LinuxDefender_Live!_v1.5.6_CeBIT.iso
Smaller option.

does sound more like a hardware issue. have a look in the BIOS and you will probably see a section on system health with readouts of cpu core temps
etc... may help
try reseating everything including memory and CPU (don't forget to add a little more of the special grease stuff if you remove the CPU
cooler)
try rebuilding it progressively.
start with barebones; cpu, single memory stick, single hdd
then if it works slowly add other components, one at a time and check it works each time...
could also possibly be power supply - that can cause al sorts of weird things.. if you have another to try.. do
If all seems fine and it still plays up you could try booyting from the XP disc and repairing the OS.... bit of a kill or cure solution but you
shouldn't loose data... hopefully!

Unplug your RJ45 (broadband cable) and see if it stays on. I had a virus once that restarted in the same way. If it is that then I might be able to
help
