sound filtering

hi all
iam trying to filter sound from the line in on my computer. but ive gotta filter it as it comes in live if you no what i mean. is there any sound packages out there that can do this. if its free all the better.

why does it need to be filtered as it comes in? why couldn't you save it on to your computer, then process it after?

and what are you needing to filter out?

If you MUST filter it as it comes in, then some kind of EQ between the sound source and line in,

if it can be saved on the computer and then filtered after, sound forge is my favourite. not cheap though...
