It's gone pop.....
Further to my other recent post apertaining to my newly built puter not working....I got it working with the help of the Locost guys but it
wouldn't read/recognise DVDs. It wouldn't record or store anything off my DV Camcorder...
Well, by feking about and downloading various Codec things, I got it to play DVDs. With a bit more tickling, I got it to record ans save video but
only in Windows Movie Maker which mean downloading other converters to enable it to be used anywhere other than this puter. I then tried to burn a
DVD. It started to convert the movie into DVD thingy. After 50mins 'converting to DVD' (the clip was 60 mins long), the puter went off. I
don't mean it unplugged itself and legged it down the street. It just when 'click'-off. It smells a hot! Like the burning smell of
death when you know you've just done something bad to electronics.........
I still need to have a look to see if its the PSU but as the fan doesn't run when it's plugged in, I'm thinking the chip has had it.
Any suggestions??

Hi Owelly,
It does sound a little ominous... and if you can smeel that acrid odour then you are likely to be right in assuming it is the PSU. Some high end
PSU's have thermal switches that only trigger the fan when hot. If it just went off without warning then it's almost certainly PSU
related.
I hope for your sake it wasn't spiking the MB or it could have took the other components with it... (Graphics card, Audio, Drives etc) the
PSU's are the most overlooked component IMO and should be regularly serviced to keep this from happening.
I'd buy another PSU - the best one's are £50 plus, but any to check the MB and ancillaries would start you on the right path.
Sounds like you have been through the mill a bit with this - but as a word of warning - Video editing is the most CPU intensive software to find any
flaws in your build. Only the highest end CPU's dont struggle with these applications. If you have a low end system - something was bound to
give at some time.
Fingers are crossed for you...
Steve

I ken very little about computers but it may be OK as you hav'nt said that the smoke has got out, so long as you keep the smoke inside
electrical equipment there's a chance it'll live!

Caber
I hope the quality of the new MACs is a step above the old crap. I have fixed broken solder joints on so many iBooks it's getting silly.
OSX has it's good points, but with the amount of windows only software I use on a daily basis that doesn't play well under Parallels etc.
I wouldn't have one as an only machine.

Sounds like the CPU or video card fan.
