Vista and the disappearing usb drives
I recently bought a couple of 2Gb usb drives to replace my old faithful 256Mb ones which are just too small to be useful any more.
My Vista 64 puter is having a hard time recognising them for some reason, but my old XP lappy loves them. Initially I thought they were faulty and
swapped them for another well known make (Disgo) but still the same problem - the puter often just hangs until the usb drive is removed. Device
Manager gets all confused with drivers popping up in both 'drives' and 'portable devices' sections.
Is there any way I can rebuild the drivers in Vista, to refresh everything? Or am I barking up the wrong bush?

Have you tried re-formating them and giving the partitions a name (ie a different name for each one) ?

Yep, tried the usual dodges to get them started with no success. I have formatted them on a 32bit system and my lappy likes them - its just my Vista
64 with the problem and it seems to be just the pen drives. My old usb 1 pen drives work fine so maybe its the usb2 drivers?
I'm now on the verge of going back to 32 bit Vista as I often have problems with the most trivial things like this and prog compatability. I
suppose I ought to do a repair on the 64bit one first though....

Usual MS every time a major change is introduced in Windows the end user has to put up with major glitches for a couple of years until it eventually
is all sorted. Only 18 months back did I consider Xp was finally reliable enough to use in the home office
If you are going to reformat the hard disk anyway, for fun why not try Mint Linux for a couple of days first.
