AVI to DVD software
I need some software to convert .avi files to something I can burn to DVD to watch on the TV.
I've tried a couple of free ones but they either crash or won't run.
Can anybody recommend a good one?

ConvertXtoDVD - Is'nt free but then that's never stopped people before
Converts roughly anything you chuck at it
Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

Tried DVDSanta last night, seemed to encode to DVD fine and burn the disk, but still wouldn't play in my player (reasonable quality Yamaha one,
so not a Tesco's cheapy).
I'll try one of the other ones.....

Well ConvertXtoDVD looked simple to use, but wouldn't recognise any blank DVD I put in my recorder....
WinAvi seems to be doing the job ok, yet to test it on my DVD player though..... sure I'll get there.
Am I write in presuming that they will not be an Dolby Digital surround sound from a .avi file?

You can encode AC3 into an AVI, but most of them will be just standard two channel sound.
ConvertX2DVD has worked on everything I have thrown at it, but I've not always been impressed with the quality afterwards. Far better to get a
player that can play Xvid/DivX files directly as you always get some quality loss when converting files, and the players are dead cheap these days.
