XP Service Pack 3

Anyone got any thoughts on installing this? Has anyone tried it and had problems? Do we really need it? etc etc

Cheers

Mark

If your machine is fully up to date then not neccesary, it's useful when doing a clean xp install, they had to do something when alot of people decided to use the vista downgrade cd's! and the update server was getting hammered so they rolled up all the updates into one.

P.S You ok haven't heard from you for a while.

I read somewhere that SP 3 improves the speed of XP by something like 30% - don't know if its true though as haven't tried it.

Not from what I've seen if anything it adds a few more startup services and lengthens the boot process. Though you can disable these. There are some minor improvements in it but by far the biggest benefit is when doing a clean install.

I've put it on my machines, some where fully upto date before hand, some where missing 6 - 12 months worth of updates

so far I've noticed no real difference on any of them

second the comments about clean install's - the last one I did had about 150 updates to download after a clean sp2 install

Some MS software wont run on anything less than SP3....(Bizare sys admin tools etc)...

On some machines you have to install the MS .Net framework files first otherwise the sp3 installation fails....

there is a bug in sp3 which prevents any further security updates, but it's any easy fix,
Tony
heres the fix
cheers guys found the cure
http;/forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3308206&SiteID=17
just go to c:\windows\system32 and find and register wups2.dll
to do that, right click on it and select open with then Choose Program and find
c;\windows\system32\regsvr32
if you choose to 'always use the selected program to open this type of file' then all you will have to do is double click on any dll to register it
once you have registered Wups2 all your problems will disappear
Thanks to a Gary o'Connor on that site for the info above
NOTE: this is only for the problem of XP with SP3 not installing updates.
Tony
