Eeeek. Do they come with a safety ladder or parachute?

That building is scarily high as it is without having the cranes towering above. Hope they dont drop anything.

They have rather a lot of land - why the need for so many huge skyscrapers? I know its for show etc but surely its a bit of a waste.

Mr Whippy - 4/2/09 at 03:32 PM

Yeah it’s mental, can you imagine how much that building would sway in the wind, or the time it would take to get to the top!

matt_claydon - 4/2/09 at 04:12 PM

Express lifts in the Burj run at 18m/s, so only about 45 seconds (maybe a minute with acceleration time) to get to the top!

The Burj Dubai actually sways very little in the wind. It was designed using a wind tunnel and if you believe what they say on TV, it sways less than about a foot.

The Burj Dubai however will be dwarfed by the Mile High Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia which, if it ever gets constructed will be 1,600m high.

I've driven past the thing, and it's just bloody wrong. I know it's probably perfectly safe, and the calcs have been double triple checked blah blah, I don't know why but I just didn't feel safe within a mile of it

Surely nearer a kilometer...

welderman - 6/2/09 at 09:58 AM

The persons who are working on

the upper most Girders can see the

"ROTATION OF EARTH"

martyn_16v - 6/2/09 at 06:56 PM

Ants crawling along the pavement could see the "ROTATION OF EARTH" if they somehow manage to use a fish-eye lens

MikeR - 6/2/09 at 07:05 PM

Just about to mention the fish eye lens ..... damn you martin thats twice in two days you've beaten me to a post

Ninehigh - 7/2/09 at 04:07 PM

I'm on fire!

...although it's just taken me nearly 24 hours to reply to that

Steve Hignett - 7/2/09 at 11:35 PM

That's nowhere near as disturbing as the giant Sink Plunger to the right of that shot!!!

Government towers in Tokyo are c.30 seconds from ground floor to the top (45 stories) so probably quicker than most car park lifts in the uk
