I really like the lines of this bike..

locoR1 - 2/10/11 at 09:05 AM

That looks very tasty getting more and more tempted to build one! Just looks so right as a single cylinder.

iank - 2/10/11 at 09:07 AM

Agree, though I'd hope most locostbuilders could replicate it for less than the £3k for the kit.

T66 - 2/10/11 at 09:08 AM

I think building one like that, would be really cheap to do aswell....

iank - 2/10/11 at 09:35 AM

My mistake, it's $3000 US so £2000 plus import duty. No idea what that works out to, but still more than if you diy.

tul214 - 2/10/11 at 12:24 PM

I like that!

Been looking for a donor on e-bay and I don't even have a licence

ashg - 2/10/11 at 01:05 PM

the only problem with it is that the suzuki savage was never that popular in the uk so finding a good cheap one may prove a bit of a mission

RK - 3/10/11 at 12:52 AM

For once, a donor that is found in Canada, and I'm not allowed to have another bike. Can't win.

steve m - 3/10/11 at 04:28 AM

It does have a british bike look, and i do like !!

I am also banned from bike ownership, good lady believes I will kill myself, I gave it some thought and decided to build a 300bhp 600 kg car instead, which is obviously much safer.....

A cafe racer is on tje cards when I retire.

Triton - 3/10/11 at 08:50 AM

Cafe racers and flat trackers are cooler than penguin pee, what comes round goes around as these were all the rage when I was a kid then it all went plastic fantastic. Streetfighters can be cool too

Triton - 3/10/11 at 08:52 AM

Crossers with 17" rims and sticky road tyres are a hoot as well, I built a Husky 400 that either spun the rear in the wet or hoisted the front in the dry and sometimes both at the same time.......oh what fun

locoR1 - 3/10/11 at 10:45 AM

After years away from bikes (sold my last bike a good 10 years ago to build the locost) I finaly have the go ahead
Don't want to go back to sports bikes and fancy building something a bit different a cafe racer looks exactly what I'm after just need to find the right bike now.

r1_pete - 3/10/11 at 11:24 AM

The idea has always been to take something relatively mundane and make it interesting, how about a honda vt500 650 early suzuki sv 650 which can be bought for peanuts, you may even cover most costs selling redundant bits...

MikeRJ - 3/10/11 at 11:30 AM

Don't like it - far too much rake on the forks for a cafe racer.

locoR1 - 3/10/11 at 11:50 AM

For me it has to have spoked wheels, steal frame and an air cooled single or twin or it just wouldn't look right.
That rules out most modern bikes. Nothing close to me on ebay that takes my fancy for the right money so ill keep looking.

RK - 4/10/11 at 12:54 AM

They are going to be the modern locost, since these cars are getting kind of expensive to be called "cheap".

T66 - 4/10/11 at 06:20 AM

Its true - These types of pipe can be built from relatively cheap parts, and if done right , look very very good.

I like the old single cylinders/twins - But looking about the Honda CB750 can be secured for around £500. Or a 1200 Bandit strong and cheap as chips.

Very nicely made indeed.

locoR1 - 16/10/11 at 05:25 PM

Just picked this up CB500T let the fun begin

T66 - 16/10/11 at 05:47 PM

Very nice - is it getting the cafe treatment ? Build Pics getting posted ?

My thoughts are drifting toward a Moto Guzzi - Mate has an immaculate Le Mans, and It would look better with a big alloy tank and single seat.

Really do like the old four pot Hondas - Check out the Pipeburn blog for ideas.

Yes and Yes.....looked at a Honda 400/4 yesterday with a view to have a bid on it then got an offer on this accepted so happy days as i really wanted a twin or single.

Never done a build thread for anything so once the seven put away for winter i will make a start and post up on here!

steve m - 16/10/11 at 07:19 PM

Although i really do not want another bike!!

Can a 2 stroke be a cafe racer, as i have one of these in my Parents loft

StevieB - 16/10/11 at 07:26 PM

The Suzuki T500 was very much used as a race bike - IIRC it was the basis of the first Seeley bikes that Barry Sheene raced.

Do a google search on T500 and TR500 for some inspiration.

ETA:

It's probably worth noting that if it is a T500 you have, and it's complete, then it oculd be worth a decent price in standard form.

steve m - 16/10/11 at 07:35 PM

I havnt seen the bike in 30 years, but from memory, it wasnt very pretty then, more like, rusty, piles of shi...................

T66 - 16/10/11 at 07:48 PM

[Edited on 16/10/11 by T66]

steve m - 16/10/11 at 07:59 PM

T66 - 17/10/11 at 08:56 PM

What year were the pictures taken , and is that you - Good pics !

I always wanted a GT380, preferred the shape of the cylinder head (RamAir) to the T500 engine, now I just like them all..

There was a really good Moto Guzzi went on Ebay last week for around £4300, single seat with alloy tailpiece, alloy polished tank & clip ons.

Yes they are me. I started racing in 1969 with a BSA MkII Spitfire, raced that for 2 years then got the first T500, so the top 2 pics would be around '72-'73, the bottom one would be in '74 because I ran a Yamaha TR350 (ex GP) in '75.
I also bought a Suzuki GT550 triple (ram air) in '74 with a view to racing that, but the handling was evil at high speed.

OMG!!!!!!!
OMG!!!!!!!

OMG!!!!! The hair! The trousers! The shoes! What were we thinking in 1974?

Fred W B - 18/10/11 at 05:36 PM

Hang on a few more years and those shoes will be back in fashion! The hair.......not so much.

Cheers

Fred W B

coozer - 18/10/11 at 06:10 PM

OMG, wish I'd kept all the 3niftys Gt250's Z1000, 400/4 etc etc...

Bike ownership isn't quite banned here, I'm allowed to have them just not allowed to ride them!

So, fast 7's and a mad v8 off roader instead... some woman just don't get it

steve m - 18/10/11 at 06:15 PM

I had a couple of Gt250, plus a super six (gt250 predessor)
a GT185 with electric start, woooah !!
a GT380, dreadfully unreliable
a Norton 850 Mk2 interstate
A 1000gl goldwing,

Plus numerous, buy it now and sell tommorrow type of bikes
