For such a huge engine they put out bugger all power...

I think the 4Cyl air cooled engine in the R-22 helicopter is around 4 litres.... and has 160hp....

its actually a 5.24 litre, but as you say, large capacity low power. max power of 150hp is achieved at 2700rpm

They're relatively unstressed as they have to put out that power, at that rpm reliably and constantly for very, very long periods of time. It would probably be possible to get more out of them, but don't really think it'd be worth the effort!
