Gunshot had an outdoor echo.....plus a Colt makes a distinct clank when it is racked......

Having shot pistols in the past, including a Colt 1911, I can assure you that he wouldn't be sitting there looking embarrassed if it had really gone off. In a closed room the bang would have HURT and he'd have been curled up in a ball holding his ears.

Also there would have been a significant flash from the barrel (some red streaks at least) and a fair bit of smoke (I know they're loaded with 'smokeless' powder, but that's only in comparison with black powder!)
