What is the best barbeque fuel for a successful cook session.Thinking either briquettes or lumpwood,or is there something else.Just gone back to charcoal after 10 years on gas

Lumpwood charcoal.

Biggest mistake is cooking too early. Wait until all the flames and smoke has gone, then start. You should get a good 90-120mins of cooking time

Sad innit?

Dont use waste oil to light it. Makes the burgers taste funny.

Glad to see you have seen the light and ditched the gas. I could never see the point in gas BBQ's.

we had a brilliant barbecue in january this year using firelogs in a kettle barbecue.

made for really tasty chicken but needed a lot of tending to and stoking.

i personally favour a rectangular barbecue with a deep pan for the charcoal. pretty much fill it so the charcoal is a couple of layers of briquettes deep at least. it'll need an adjustable height grill though. will last ages though and give you something to sit around after it's dropped dark.

start with burgers, then sausage/steaks, then chicken.

Just don't get the SA's started on "Braai's"

Thorn tree wood is the best, but otherwise use any wood to get flames to clean the grid and for atmosphere and than add charcoal ("this is a 3/4/5/6 beer fire" I.E. you drink that many beers while waiting for the flames to die down).

This pic would be anywhere in SA on any weekend - check the steaks Taken in my back garden. We have a semi indoor build in braai but it's a bit small for a crowd.

Cheers

My new gaffer is Rhodesian but lived in SA for a number of years. Speaks very highly of life out there. Sounds like he would have starved if it not for his BBQ. I thought us Brits drank a lot - sounds like you lot take some beating.

When I used to spend a bit of time in Zimbabwe (a long time ago now ) I was told that Zimbabwe consumes more beer per capita than anywhere else in the world. Don't know if it's actually true, but watching them it was believable
