Cadburys Man - 27/9/13 at 11:41 AM

So yesterday i go out and buy myself a Stuart Taylor Locosaki thinking everything's great only to find out that no-one will insure me JUST because i'm unemployed even tho i was made redundant, worked for them for 5 years and worked most of my adult life, talk about feeling discriminated against :'((

Not happy

Daz.

Oh and hi everybody )

matt_gsxr - 27/9/13 at 11:51 AM

If you were self employed (but going through a quiet patch) do you think that might make a difference.

slingshot2000 - 27/9/13 at 11:54 AM

I think you hit the "post" button twice, that wot !

But wouldn't they want proof? Also if i unforunately had to claim wouldn't they check as at the moment i'm registered with the job centre

Cadburys Man - 27/9/13 at 12:08 PM

Sorry i quoted the wrong person :-/

whitestu - 27/9/13 at 12:08 PM

Which insurers have you asked?

gaz_gaz - 27/9/13 at 12:15 PM

So tell them your employed.
Never been asked to prove I worked by an insurance company.

ross05 - 27/9/13 at 12:35 PM

tell them you are retired

Not Anumber - 27/9/13 at 12:37 PM

Ive never had an insurance company ask who i was employed by- only what i do.

pekwah1 - 27/9/13 at 12:39 PM

how does this have any bearing on insurance?
If you have the money to pay for the insurance, surely that's it done?
Who cares if you have a job or not?

nick205 - 27/9/13 at 12:40 PM

Tosh!

If you've got the money to pay it's of no concern whatsoever to the insurer whether you're employed or not - they really don't care.

Is there some other reason they might be rejecting you?

Insurance is based on risk profiles and one of the data points is profession.
Presumably unemployed people, statistically, crash a lot more than average...

ETA: Lying to the insurance company is a rather bad idea if you ever do have an accident as that's when they check for anything they can use to weasel out of paying.

swanny - 27/9/13 at 12:45 PM

was it for monthly payments? might offering to pay up front help? maybe they were concerned about your ability to pay and this ouyght to resolve that

From what I have heard, they dislike the unemployed because they think that with their extra free time, they'll be driving more. Most odd considering that driving to work and back is the majority of driving for many people and it is usually at the the busiest times!

pekwah1 - 27/9/13 at 01:08 PM

plus a kit car insurance is going to be a limited mileage policy.
Being unemployed is surely better as you are likely to be driving at quieter times as everyone else is at work!

Cadburys Man - 27/9/13 at 02:42 PM

It's purely because i'm now unemployed, no other reason. It takes the wee as i can pay for the whole year upfront. I have 22 years no claims bonus and have owned or own 200sx's, a Skyline, Suzuki GSX-R1000 and a Yamaha Raptor 700R to name a few!!!

Did they ask what your occupation was, or whether you are in employment? There is a distinction.
I insured mine with Adrian Flux, they asked for my occupation, not whether I was employed, self employed or unemployed.
I wasn't aware that if you changed jobs or were made redundant after the policy took effect, that you had to inform the insurance company?
Shop around

PS: What part of Chesterfield are you from?

Sorry can't help with the insurance, but I used to own a ST Locosaki just curious to see if it's the same one

Shop around, each and every insurer have varying rules.

Mr Whippy - 27/9/13 at 04:11 PM

Simple solution, lie

Though the cost of running a car and not having a job? Not easy

MikeRJ - 27/9/13 at 04:18 PM

I don't want to be rude, but it seems crazy to only check insurance costs after buying a car.

You could try getting someone else to insure it (e.g. family member) but have yourself on the policy as the main driver.

Tbh I think the problem may stem from his employment status rather than driver history, he may have 5 years no claims and a clean license and just assumed there would be no issues. I've never been more than £150 for a kit car even ones that's were stupidly over powered. Since when do insurance companies even ask for employment details? Non of their business anyway, nosey buggers.

Hellfire - 27/9/13 at 06:59 PM

Have you approached the specialist kit car insurers and been refused?

Phil
