I'm building a low brick wall in the garden and I want to match the mortar to some existing. The existing mortar is a light yellow colour.
The colour doesn't have to be an exact match as its the other side of the patio (4m^2).

Is the only way to replicate this colour by using white cement and silver/light building sand or is there another method as white cement is expensive compared to grey?

Coloured Mortar is produced by using a powdered dye.It's available from most good builders suppliers.The more dye added to a set quantity of mix the deeper the colour will be.

The colour of the sand can make a big difference, especially with lime mortar mixes. Its always best to do some test small batches.

You don't need to build the wall with coloured mortar. rake out the joints and point up when finished with a lime mix. This will mean the pointing will be from one batch and be all the same colour and the lime will retard moss. Ordinary mortar would do but if you make a mess lime mix is easier to clean.

As above the colour of sand makes a difference. Also portland cement is grey which "dulls" the colour. I'd try yellow sand, and 50/50 lime and white cement. It goes off a bit quicker with the cement added so you can beast on with it.
