Sorting this economy madness out

Hi all,
Been thinking about this-and had a idea (mad maybe tho)
Why can we not start to build a load of council houses again-think about this we start a big program including all the mothballed sites to make council houses-people get jobs-suppliers have work and their workers have work and money-the suppliers get their stuff from other people more workers saved -people get affordable houses which means more money floating around making more workers safe in their jobs and on and on!!!! the govenment also get a lot of houses for the future and we do not carry on bailing the bloody greedy banks out and throwing money at other things to try and patch up this mess the greedy people and banks have got us into-may be a completly daft idea but all i have told so far have thought it was a great idea only one flaw in it -its using some common sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its not a bad idea, but very expensive! 50000 houses at 50k each would be 2.5bn, and im sure 50,000 houses would not replenish the stock that councils have sold off.

EDIT: it would keep a lot of people in work though, and people in houses, and the price could be cheaper if they built flats rather than houses.

I think it was a bad idea selling them off in the first place - it gave a nice boost to one bunch of people near the bottom of the asset ladder, but created a new group below who cant even get a house at all, never mind one they own!

i was thinking something similar, only building power stations and factories, so then our country can start producing again, instead of relying on china...also it would make us less dependent on others for energy...it would create jobs too

good idea, glad to see there are others thinking along the same lines

I doesn't matter what they spend the money on as long as it stays in Britain, once spent is hasn't gone, it flows through the economy speeding it up as it goes.

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

It would only cost that much if you didn't charge rent. Assuming a reasonable rent you should easily be able to get your money back over the lifetime of the property.

And she was very unpopular with many people for doing so, though very popular for those people who bought their council house below the market value then sold it at a profit, even though they had to spend all of that money on a new house.

There's nothing like bribing voters is there?

Great idea, what we also need is industry. This great country of ours used to lead the field in so many things, aviation, cars and heavy industry, to name but 3. When are the people in charge going to realise that a country must produce things to sell at home and abroad in order that we can pay our way in the world. They are happy to see things like Austin/Rover and 100 others go to the wall yet, waste billions on bailing out the banks, who, show no sign of passing on the windfall to UK businesses.
End of rant.

Can't be done. It is just too cheap to make things in China. You'd have to pay £1 per hour to be anything like competitive. Who would work for less than dole money? Who could live off it?

The mistake was that the Government then stopped the Local Authorities from spending the income from the sales on building new homes and forced the Councils to sell off all of the houses.

Cant we start a locostbuilders community and have a micro-fanancial world. Who says we have to be connected to the big bad world.
Be totally self sufficient with self built power supplies, everyone can have a 6 car garage with workshop and lathe, plus bedroom and en-suite bathroom above (and of course big screen etc etc).

Entry fee to join but after that everyone is resonsible for well being of community. Obviously total site will be huge and in spare time we build the track..... and pits.... etc.

could be called 'Little Britain.......and Scotland.....and Wales....etc'

been saying about this for ages.

If the money wasted by reducing vat 2.5%
had been spent on starting to build 'council' houses
the whole thing would become self financing.

Start by building on brown field sites, employ
out of work builders (not foreign) -saves dole money.
All the people in B&B (at huge cost to us) could
then be rehoused (more savings for the tax payer)
More rent coming in from them as well as more
jobs are created

Suppose it's too simple or could it be that those in
power have some hidden interest somewhere

All been a c--k up for years, govts have sold everything
off and country is now skint.

I agree that short term it is cheaper to buy abroad but, what happens when the workers there start to demand better pay better conditions ect. We will be held to ransom for coal, oil and god knows what else, because, although we have the resources and the skilled workforce, we no longer have the infrastructure to start to supply our own.
