AFAIK it is not required, but I would apply a sealer.
Especially if it will cover curves.

You may find that unless you seal everything thoroughly, you will get moisture problems - this will swell the MDF. Is it an interior part?

Hi

I would be surprised if you could achieve a lasting bond between the two without thorough sealing and subsequent rubbing down - the latter would also be required to give a comparable finish to that of metal or GRP. I'm fairly certain that the coarse finish of MDF would show through the film if it were applied 'raw'.

it will cover minor imperfections but show anything else, best off going on a smooth, sealed surface. moisture may still get into wood and swell it over the time, the wrap will swell until it gives way and cracks/comes away in time - how long that takes depends on how wet/damp the wood gets

ive wrapped plenty of metals and plastics with it but never wood
