Wheeler Dealers last night. Morgan Chassis

Anyone see Wheeler Dealers last night? They picked up a Morgan cheap that was is need of a chassis.

Quite an interesting rebuild. Took about 150 hours as I remember it.

Thing I didn't realise was that they have a metal chassis, I thought they were wooden through and through...

I also didn't know that the rear axle sits above the chassis members on leaf springs and SERIOUS bump stops on the rails

That's a common myth, they have a wooden frame to support the body. The chassis is a very odd thing using Z section steel rather than 'U' or rectangular sections.

Yep they had some very rotten plywood floor panels to replace. I wonder how much marine ply weighs vs ali...

Morgan chassis changes are not exactly uncommon, a weak chassis is normally shown up by the infamous Morgan wobble at a critical speed band.

The chassis is the flimsiest car chassis you will ever encounter, just a couple of z sections and joined by the front axle frame not exactly accurately made either the guys who build them just use a tape measure and draw fresh chalk lines on the floor for each chassis --- no jigs of any kind.

I must say that I feel more comfortable having the monocoque chassis around me that one of those...

And having been lucky enough to have been given a present of a Morgan hire for a day, the xtreme has a much better ride...

You have to be the right sort of chap to be a Morgan owner.

I'm not.

Think of every stereotype imaginable for Morgan owners.

They're all correct.

That's my first hand experience anyway.

I saw a Morgan driver at a petrol station with 'Le Mans' t-shirt, lurid hawaiian-style shorts and heavily tattooed.
Tweed cap and pipe nowhere in sight.

The older style cars are pretty fun cars for those people who want to go for a nice little drive rather than hammering it around everywhere at speed.

Interestingly they are now selling an old style car but built on the new monocoque chassis as used on the Aero range of cars. I wonder if they are planning to drop the steel girders and just use the 1 chassis for all their cars.

Would really love an Aero, its just a bit different...

Did my work experience at the factory a fair few years ago too

They don't use anything you might think of as a steel girder just really flimsy Z section folded from sheet steel.

Used to know a few rabid Morgan owners through a friend who had one (a very well known lady in the old car hillclimb/sprint fraternity north of the border) and have to agree with zilspeed except for my friend they were a load of ........
