Smoke
A quick question I'm hoping to get an answer to please guys...
If a glow plug was not working would a diesel engine produce lots of smoke?
Thanks in advance.

Probably not although some do stay on now on newer cars to help with emissions, more likely EGR or DPF if producing alot of smoke. How old and how
many miles done?

Not normally, just be difficult to start when cold.

OK thanks.
It is a 2005 VM Motori engine so no particulate filter. I have already cleaned and checked the EGR valve. Seems as though its misfiring, but also
producing loads of smoke after a year without use.

Knackered injector may explain the apparent mis fire?

Faulty air sensor or fuel rail pressure regulator (so overfueling) or a stuck open / leaky injector? Stuck piston rings?
I did have a problem with a Focus that would suddenly lose power and run poorly, which turned out to be faulty glow-plugs - yes that seemed odd to me,
but having got the fault code, I replaced them and it cured that problem. Really weirdly, it also cured the temperature gauge that had kept dropping
back to zero!
Have you got a code reader?

Thanks for the replies.
No code reader so I'm trying to eliminate possible causes one by one. I will look for someone with a code reader and go from there I think.
