I know three-fifths of f*ck-all about helicopters, but that one just looks wrong on its approach - it looks like a fixed-wing plane approaching a flat-top.

I suspect there was a strong tail wind and he/she had to pull back to slow down and just clipped the rail with the real wheel.

The windows were open when it hit so hopefully they managed to swim out if they didn't get chopped up by the rotor breaking up.

Yes - that's the worrying bit - there were probably at least 3 or 4 crew members, plus there could have been 20 or so passengers. Hopefully they got out OK (there were a couple of small boats behind)

They use that video at work to show flight deck safety and what happens when it goes to rats. Apparently the pilot approached too fast, lost sight of the deck and his back wheel got caught up in the safety net. When he tried to pull up the wheel snagged and pulled the chopper over the side, ending up a big splash. Luckly they all escaped, thanks to the dunker training, invented by the Royal Navy, and stolen by the yanks (no offence!)

The approach seems a bit on the odd side as if it was kind of an emergency landing (to fast).
Why would he otherwise land so close to the edge and why the cameraman has followed this chopper as there where a few others flying around?
From what i know most of the pilots who fly those multi million dollar machines are experienced people and being a people carrier, most of them have a great sence of responsability.
Something most have been wrong before the approach i guess.
If there was no sign of an emergency than the pilot should not be allowed to even drive his own wheelchair as with 20 or more troops inside such an accident will cost somebodys life no doubt about that.

Don't forget that the ship was probably pitching up and down a bit too.

...and most military aircraft are bloody hard to fly!

Trying to put a Chinook on a small helipad screwed to the back-end of a destroyer ain't easy, whichever way you look at it.

They dont mess about when it comes to landing on one of those.. even the planes, thud to the deck to compansate for the waves.

After watching one of our pilots bounce around the deck on landing, I asked him why the dodgy landing, to which he replied "I've never landed on the ship, it's always been a controlled crash".

They can keep their flying pay.
