hi could anyone give me there advice on a problem with the oil pressure on my zzr1100 motor,i have been building the car for years but not far off iva ,the oil pressure gauge is a racetec item ,when the throttle is blipped the oil pressure gauge is more like a rev counter sweeping up and dropping down as the revs fall ,I had been taking the pressure reading out of the sump ,but spoke to carl at extreme engines and was told to take my flexible out of the 17 mm nut just below the ignition cover apparently this is the main oil gallery ,this has been done now ,I have more pressure than ever and still have a rev counter for a pressure gauge ,any ideas would be much appreciated
What is the operating range and f the gauge you are using?
hi Andy I think it should be about 24 to 44 psi at 4000 revs it is a racetec gauge new but been in for a few years
Think Andy meant whats the range of the guage; 0-?psi
Also you say it's going up/down with the revs but what readings are you getting?
How were you getting any pressure reading in the sump?
yes sorry I see what you mean, gauge range is 0 to 100 psi racetech
Not familiar with the zzr1100 but the R1 oil pressure can vary from 5-10psi at idle to 80-90psi at revs (more when cold) so with a 0-100psi gauge it
would look like a rev counter. Movement wouldn't look as extreme with a 0-150 scale, but would still vary a lot.
Is it an electric or capillary gauge?

hi all and adithorp right, I ran the engine up to temp ,at idle about 11 psi ,at 4000 rpm 54 psi should be between 23 to 45 psi ,at 5000 rpm 60 psi it holds these pressures ,the pressure does not drop away ,its not been jetted yet so struggles after 5000 6000 rpm, I have done away with the mechanical water pump and have a electric one ,note shore if this would make a difference to pressure probably not , but there is still this rev counter effect on the gauge ,cheers nick
All sounds normal to me. The reading are slightly higher than you're expecting but just running the engine (coolant) up to temp', won't
get the oil truly hot. As it's a capillary gauge, then it can't be wired incorrectly or be affected by interference or voltage variation or
mismatch of sensor/gauge like an electric one. If by "rev counter effect" you mean the pressure goes up/down with the revs... well thats
what it does. The pressure variation in a bike engine is greater than in a car engine so can be unsettling.

thanks for the replies , yes sorry should of said I came out of the oil pressure switch outlet I thought this would be ok for the gauge but as I said carl at extreme engines said the 17 mm plug in the main oil gallery was the place to come out of , I have been told to check the oil pressure relief valve ,I am not shore the effects would be of a valve stuck open and stuck closed ,I think I am right in saying that to much oil pressure is as bad as not enough ,I may have a look at the relief valve as I may modify the sump as they sit very low on the zzr,i just want to be clear on this problem cheers nick
