Hi all:
I'm getting oil temps in the 98C (210F)range while driving 80 mph on the highway. Does this seem reasonable?
--Thanks, Chris
Seems reasonable saying your engine will be hitting a constant 8,000 revs. Doesn't want to be much higher though IMO...
My oil temp was nearly contantly over 100c while driving on the track at the donington show, with a max of 138c at one point.
Ran well all day with no problems.
On the road at a steady 70mph oil temp stays around 80-85c
Tony.

98 is fine.
Thanks gents!

Yep, used to run mine to ~110c on track in really hot conditions. 138c is a tad high for the majority of oils as Hellfire mentioned, do you have an oil/air oil cooler fitted Tony?
138 is to hot!
the oil will lose its components faster
sow atleast you need to change more often!!
oil is a world on its own!
i recommend you to use a thicker oil
20W it can cope better with high temperatures...
saying that it needs more time to come on temperature.. anyway its build for higher temperatures!
for example to cope with the temperatures of africa! etc. etc.
your engine will run less hot and thats an important factor.
Tks
20w maybe OK for an old banger with worn valve guides etc, but not in a bike engine I wouldnt think, I suspect it wouldnt do it much good unless the
oil was ALWAYS that high (which its not) and so thin enough.
Some oils can handle those temps though, it depends on the blend and base stocks. Redline is meant to be good for 150c + before it starts to break
down, although you obviously wouldnt want to run the engine to that temperature intentionally.
ok but let it bee 15W.
the base from what i say is just that by using a higher W number.
he can compensate a bit.
saying that i don't agree that 20W only is good for a old banger..
its just viscousity..nothing more nothing less..
in norway you will need 0W..
in africa the 20W will be like 0W at 40degrees normal start of temperature!!
anyway a oil cooler would be better but if the bike doesn't has it standard.....
Tks
