Being a converted miniman myself looking to embark upon a new lifestyle! Could someone cut the jargon for me and explain things like 'live axles', type9 gearboxes.etc.....Whats a dead axle.????.....and whats wrong with type 8 gearboxes???. I know it sounds stupid but everyone has to start somewhere????

a 'live axle' is the kinda axle you see on older cars, and everyday trucks. The rear axle has the diff in the middle of it and the whole thing moves up and down - diff, the lot.

alternative axles, say a sierra, have the diff bolted to the floor, and exposed drive shafts going to the hubs.


AFAIK there is no such thing as a type 8 box!

A type 9 is the 'std' ford box fitted during the majority of the sierra years to the rwd cars. Its a 5 speed, with a seperate bolt on bell housing. After about 1989 this was dicontinued for the MT75, which is all alu, and had an integral bell housing.

Pre type nine were things like type 'C' four speeds.

If you get a pre 89 sierra manual, its likely to have a type 9 as a five speed.

This box seems to be universally used on a lot of kit cars, and there are adapter bell housing smade for other engines like fwd vauxhalls and rovers.
