Mirror boss, Is there such a thing?
Mark G - 10/12/08 at 08:31 PM

Hi all

I'm after a decent looking set of mirrors that would pass an SVA. As far as I'm aware they have to fold at the mounting point incase they are hit, am I right in thinking this?

If so is there such a thing as a mirror mounting boss / base which I could attach These mirrors to?

To make sense of it I've drawn a tacky diagram which is below. The piece I'm looking for is shown in blue. I'm thinking it would be something like a rose joint but obviously have to be stiffer so the mirror doens't fold when driving along or lean over on its own weight.

I hope I'm making some sort of sense, Its annoying because I've got the exact thing in my head but I just don't know if anyone actually makes it?

assuming the ball type joint at the mirror end will swivel 180degress, could you do this.... (excuse the crude picture)

Fairing mount mirrors would be better to mount on your scuttle than those handlebar mount ones. You could get a set same as those scooter mirrors for half that price on ebay though if you really want to use them

No you're not right. If the mirrors do not extend beyond the widest part of the fixed bodywork of the vehicle then they do not have to be folding.

They don't need to fold flat unless outside the wheel track of the car was my understanding??
Hope I'm not wrong as they are done and dusted.

So providing they're not the widest point of the car they don't have to fold?

I imagine they wouldn't stick out any further than the rear arches?

Unlikely but then I have 11 1/2 inch wide arches.

Mine don't fold back & it was not questioned at SVA

Second on that!

Third on that. Had the mirrors installed as per second drawing (ie rotated). No problems at all....

Just to add, I used those mirrors mounted directly to the scuttle and they shook around like bas*****!!!
Had to make some ally plates to spread the load.
Now have them mounted to screen uprights
