Fibre Glass Bonnet Starting To Fracture !!
craig_007 - 4/4/09 at 10:58 AM

Hi All,

I have noticed today whilst polishing the car that the bonnet is begining to split in 2 places, split is almost the whole length of the bonnet !!

Is there any thing I can do before this gets much worse or is my best bet to get an aluminium bonnet made to the same dimensions as fitted ??

Is it easy enough forming a bonnet,What grade of aluminium is used for this ??

Thanks

Craig

I would use 1.2mm.

I have the same problem. You have to grind out the old gel coat along the crack and fill with new, then sand back. Remember to cover the gel with cellotape to make the surface cure (or add wax in styrene, it does the same thing).

very inportant!!!
drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop the crack spreading.

You may want to put a couple of layers of cloth on the underside of the cracks to re-enforce the area were the cracks are forming, then repair the top portion.

Two very good points. I did glass the inside before starting the gel. No need to drill though, the gel cracked the whole length of the bonnet

Cheers Guys,

At least I now know it's not just mine,I will try and stem the split just now with something on the engine side of the bonnet.

Thanks
