Holes in bonnet sides for cooling, NOW WITH PICTURES
welderman - 9/6/09 at 10:38 AM

Right since the cars under going modifications at the moment, i thiought its also time to put some holes in the bonnet sides to let out the nasty hot air.

Any ideas on shapes, ie holes, slots, rectangles, looks etc.

Picture of car as it was at sva from the side.

How about a reversed NACA duct? Or just a rectangular grille like on c3 corvettes?
As for bonnet, I think the RS turbo had a reverse bonnet scoop that was good at keeping temps down.

hughpinder - 9/6/09 at 10:51 AM

How about the same shape as your bonnet locks and in line!

Here's mine. Not actually measured the temperature but the surface of the bonnet is significantly cooler than before. The vents are now painted black and look much nicer in my opinion. We made a simple press tool out of MDF to form the mesh to fit in the cutouts. They are polyester resin bonded to the bonnet.

Vents on both side of course.

I liked the bubble type holes that Steve used on his Worx.

Marcus - 9/6/09 at 11:15 AM

Wicket, I hate you.... that's exactly what I'm going to do, now it looks like I'm copying!!

mad-butcher - 9/6/09 at 11:20 AM

now them I like a lot

DarrenW - 9/6/09 at 11:26 AM

Wickets are really nice and look professional. I didnt form the mesh on mine but did a similar triangular arrangement either side of bonnet bulge. Also did a series of round holes in side. Bonding black mesh behind works well. There will be some pics in my archive of what i did. I did a post about 3 years ago too.

Type in "Aston Martin Vent" into Google images. Lots of inspirational ideas, I will be doing one of these soon.

yip Wicket's ones look well smart

welderman - 9/6/09 at 11:31 AM

keep em coming, i thought about Worx style, he still has his template, lol.

Wicket, looking very good there.

Ive thought about cutting same shape as my bonnet aero catches, but not sure if they are big enough.

DarrenW, i quite like the circle thing you have going on there too.

Not sure on the reverse naca, as the bonnet area is quite curved and the duct may not sit as close as i would like, Ta though.

wicket, that is so neat!
I think there's another blue MK going to be sporting similar soon!

jabbahutt - 9/6/09 at 02:45 PM

not the clearest photo but gives you an idea of how I did mine. They're molded in plastic with aluminium mesh on the inside, cost about £12 for a pair

Here is what we have done - idea shamelessly stolen from road warrior in Australia...

We have been busy with it this weekend.
All I would say is: Don't use a restrictive mesh or louvres if you really need it for cooling. Best is no mesh at all... that said, we have used very thin mesh because it looks nice, but will rip it out if it is not effective enough...

indeed but it uses expanded mesh - I am not a fan of that stuff, in fact I loathe it in an undescribable way - whcih is usually nore metal than hole - you can buy proper wire mesh that is just as strong but gives more ventialtion.

"Do they work?" Hard to say but the car was pretty happy sat in traffic at Laon recently, when lots of other cars were parked up with steam coming out.
