Headlights on the wings
Ninehigh - 15/6/09 at 10:37 PM

As above really has anyone fitted the headights to the cycle wings for the "lit where you're going" effect or is it too flimsy/shaky to be worthwhile?

I would think the wings would be to unstable they have enough trouble supporting their own weight

Ninehigh - 15/6/09 at 10:45 PM

Fair enough it would be brilliant if they could be fixed around there somehow though

problem is the wing stays not the wings you would also have to mount the wing higher to accomodate the wiring and headlight base mounting

taken from IVA Manual, section 20

quote:

Note 5: Lamp security - Lamps must be securely mounted to the vehicle, double-sided tape as a method of attachment is to be considered acceptable only in situations where it is the manufacturer's intended method

Note 6: Lamp position. Achieving position requirements by masking external parts of the illuminated area is not acceptable. However except for headlamps, internal masking or internal painting of lamp lenses is permitted but this must be permanent and must not affect lamp intensity.

and you have to take into account that the lamps have to be within the required distance perametures fromt he edge of the car and road surface.

personally i would have to agree with what has been said, i don't think the wing would be strong enough and considering the amount of vibration that goes through the wings your light beams would be all over the place!

Man, don't you guys have enough problems putting these wretched things together?? With small LEDs though, it shouldn't weigh much. But the stay would have to made of kryptonite or something because of all the bouncing around.

Ninehigh - 15/6/09 at 11:53 PM

Well the bouncing around was the consideration

Switch to clam shell wings?, just a thought,.... I will go away again now then.

You could always copy the Citroen DS - put a link between the steering mechanism and pivoting headlamps.

Then think about the amount of driving in darkness you'll be doing and work out whether it is worth the effort.

I was going to bolt a head lamp to the top of my crash helmet for the ''light what you see'' approach---------- just an idea

pewe - 16/6/09 at 09:02 AM

Problem with mounting them to the wings (cycle type) is that the first time you are opposite locking it at night down a dark country lane the headlights will be pointing one way whilst you are going the other (I kid you not!).
Cheers, Pewe

On my rally escort we would point a set of spots so that the right hand side pointed left and the left hand side pointed right to give maximum advantage around corners, works fine on opposite lock too

I was thinking about fitting some small drivin lights to the tops of my wing for the same effect but leaving the headlights fixed

Well ideally the 7 would be my personal car, as 90% of my driving is just for me. During the winter days I'll be going to and coming home from work at night so it would be useful if indeed the whole swivelling headlamps thing is actually useful. I figured fixing them around the cycle wing area would pretty much connect them to the wheels and if they were on the wings themselves it would look cool

Jap import mk2 MR2's have driving lights that move with the steering angle, in addition to the normal headlamps. They look quite small from the outside, I have no idea how big the mechanism hiding behind the bumper is though.
