Cheap material for sound deadening
givemethebighammer - 8/3/04 at 09:05 PM

Any ideas of what (cheap) to glue to the insides of the aluminium body panels to deaden any vibration and drumming noise ?

I had thought maybe old carpet ?, also thought of expanding foam filler but seems far too permanent and potentially very messy !!

You cannot beat using the proper stuff, sound deadening pads from any bodyshop supply company. Normally used to silence doorskins, they are about £2.50 each (or less) and are about 12" x 18". You peel off the protective plastic sheet, warm the adhesive side with a heat gun until it just starts to blister and wack it on.

so you would use one of these pads in the centre of an average sized door skin or several ?

Just one, or a part of one - it takes out the resonance. I am going to use them on my ally, just to make sure I don't get that vibration rasp at certain RPM's (also stops the rivets vibrating loose)

Sound deadening? - who needs it! Since running the car it may have the odd rattle but I have never heard them over the noise of the intake and exhaust. Oh and the wind going past your ears.
My experience of sound deadening materials in various cars I have restored is that it acts as moisture traps.

The black bitumen type won't hold moisture, only the foam ones. You can stick them on with spray adhesive or the ones Mark uses, self adhesive.

yours, Pete.
