What kind of column are you using? The boss doesn't need to collapse if the column is collapsible. Halfords do a Sierra centre for £25ish. You can pick wheels up to fit the boss in local ad-mags or shows. I got mine at the scrappie for £5 (mountney).

Use donor wheel for SVA, then change it afterwards.

Midland Wheel Supplies do reasonably priced steering wheels.

Ned,

was that a collapsable one or not?

I am having dramas with the un identifiable non colapsing column on my F27, could this be over come by adding a collapsable boss? would be cheaper in the long run as the car is all wired up to the existing unidentifiable column switches.

Col,

Not sure if the boss is collapsible or not (how do you tell!) i've got a collapsible sierra column, so not ever bothered finding out!

Ned.

As DavidM says, there are major advantages in using the donor's wheel for the SVA.

1. It matches the steering column and thus forms a 'complete protection system' (I think that's the phrase they use). In other words, a Sierra wheel on a Sierra column makes an acceptable system. If you use another wheel you may have to prove that it's up to the standard.

2. It covers more of your dashboard, so you have a bigger untested area (which goes out to 50mm or so from the rim of the wheel).

I have a nice wide Sierra wheel off a car without power steering - I can just about get my legs under it when I get in - which will be on the car for the time it takes to pass the SVA. Straight after that it goes in the bin and my nice little Astrali wheel goes straight on!

rgds,

David

But isn't it a bugger to position the instruments do you can see them with both size wheels?

It would probably be easy enough to weld a bracket for your existing switches to the sierra column outer and replace the one you have so you can use whatever wheel you want. Lolocost do a Sierra boss for £15 I've noticed and a mountney wheel to fit it for £30.
