Drill size
shortie - 18/5/04 at 10:20 PM

Just wanted to confirm drill size for 4.8x10 rivets for the floor. Was going to use a 5mm drill but then thought maybe I should use a 4.8mm drill.

any advice??

Rich.

Use a 4.8mm if you can get one the tighter the better

For the price of a 4.8mm diameter drill as opposed to a 5mm, I know what I'd use!

I used a 5mm bit, the extra 0.2mm is handy for actually getting the rivet into the hole - I never found them loose anyhow.
If your'e worried try a couple on a scrap bit of metal and see what you think.

Ideally you should use the same diameter as the rivet ie 4.8mm

I was always taught that in a perfect world you actually ream the hole to the exact size..... although i rarely bothered

If you are using structural rivets that are designed to expand slightly in the hole then you could get away with a slightly oversize drill.

Personally i bought a ten pack of 4.8mm drill bits from a website (can't remember who) for about £8 delivered.
