Amongst other things, this site does sympathy every now and then so here goes! Made the screen frame up, got a mobile screen fitter to cut and fit the glass and he broke it at the last minute. Never mind, took it away and cut and fitted another and only charged what he said in the first place. Made the uprights, fitted the screen then took all apart and fitted a mirror to the drivers screen support. Screwed all together last night again making very sure the fixing screws into the screen frame are not too long. Came to it today and theres a f**king crack right across the corner of the glass. B******S!!!! 80 quid down the swanney. Wonder if I can claim on my insurance?

And people moan when i tell them the price......

My idea was to weld a couple of tags behind the alloy frame and then nut and bolt through the tags and the uprights, no chance of breaking the glass. You can have a nice looking dome head bolt on the outside.
Although 'someone' didn't listen to me, did it the normal way, made sure the screws were short enough and..... well I don't need to tell you what happened do I?

Its not the length of the screws thats the prob. They are nowhere near the glass by miles!!!

Remember fitting the screen to the frame on my striker, would the fecker go into the frame with the rubber on no. Brilliant idea i thought lets put fairy liquid round the edge should go in fine so thats what i did. Picked up the screen and the bstard and it was so slippery it slipped out of my hands and smashed on the floor. Doh!! lol.
Second time round i was far more careful.

I just left a little crack in the corner of my screen. It's a vertical screen so it's going to hit by something and smashed soon enough!!!

I set hardened studs into the frames that are blind on the inside and leave a thread on the outside. That way you have no bother like that.

At least you have a template to have new glass cut, i would possibly cut it a few millimeteres smaller, as its sounds as if its to tight a fit, if the screws are not anywhere near the glass
As there is no other reason for cracking

Is there a point on the frame that's putting pressure on the glass and stressing it? Maybe a kink on one of your bends (and you know that you don't want kinky bends!!!!)

I had a 72 MGB Roadster that, when I got it, have a vertical crack in the passenger side of the windscreen. I got a good deal on a replacement glass and got a local fitter to put it in. It was fine for about a week and then I hit a small bump on the road and the new screen cracked in exactly the same place. Turned out the screen frame mountings were a little squiffy and twisting the screen only very slightly but enough that when I went over the bump it shot through again. Might be worth checking that your mounts are not trying to twist the screen at all.

Can't you bond it into the frame, rather than bolting it up?
