Steel panelling!!
Iwan - 25/2/02 at 06:51 PM

Gents – has anybody resorted to using steel as an alternative to ali??
If so, what size??
I would imagine that weight would be a factor, but I am building for pleasure not perfection and ali sheets are not easy to get hold of in North Wales. As I was going to spray my panels, again steel is easier to paint than ali.

Hi Iwan,
I've used mirrow polished stainless 0.7mm thick all round the car, may be slightly heavier than Ali, but boy does it look good, having said that i can lift the car off the ground on my own, one end at a time i may add so it can't be that heavy, oh, described in log book as silver.
Happy building.

I used mild steel sheets for my sides, got them from a place that does panels for cars 4x4 cost about £5 i think hth John.

Have used mild steel on the front sides but ali would be better as it is easier to work with! Spraying ali is easy if you use the right primer - use a upoxy 2 part etching primer, it is high build and can be used on fibreglass as well!
Steel OK but it rusts, it;s heavy and is more difficult to bend! having said all this the conrodkids car does look pretty damn nice!
