Not sure about IVA compliance but I used "Boy Racer" style mesh from Halfrauds. SVA man didn't even look at it. Looks good too

I bet it works but it's named as one of the items that is unacceptable for use in the IVA manual so don't fit it before the test!

EDIT: mine is 3mm diam rod bent and tacked into a BBQ grille style thingy, powdercoated black

I also used that e-bay shop if you ask they will cut it to the size you want (well they did for me), works out cheaper.. It was cheaper to use the stainless mesh rather than the halfords or B&Q meshes (and these are not stainless). This passed SVA. You need to read the IVA manual to check what spacing ect you need to meet the radius requirments. i.e. chose the spacing such that you only need the radius requirment to be "blunted" or larger spacing where the radius requirment is the same or smaller than the wire used in the mesh..

Now that does look nice. What does it look like in B&Q as i cant see how it resenbles a kitchen shelf?

Looks like the way forward for me.

Its cheating!... I made mine out of Stainless steel rods, individually cut to shape, then glued in (and together) with clear silicone.

See my avvy, ta!

Or you could get something like this from ebay... (I've also seen them in B+Q).

Ikea Lampig Stainless Steel Trivet on eBay (end time 08-Feb-11 13:30:14 GMT)
