How to square up rear fog light to make it vertical
daniel mason - 11/2/11 at 07:43 PM

I have the square caterham rear lights and altough the brake, side and indicator cluster is angled to take the curve, the fog and reverse are not. What is the best way to square the fog light up on the rear tub?
And does the reverse light need to be vertical? Cheers

is there a backing plate to trim? any pics?

fog and reverse must be perpendicular to the ground for SVA, doubt if it has changed for IVA.

You need a small alu spacer plate that takes the angle of the rear panel out, i made my own.

Daniel,

Caterham use a rubber "cheese wedge" to bring it vertical.

But Ive sent you a U2U regarding another solution, which I'm sure you'd like!

Bent an upside down 'L' shape bit of 1.2mm ali, cut holes in it for the wires and bolts and sat it behind the lamp.

Cheers,

Couple of points from the IVA regulations:
there is no requirement for the reversing light to be vertical.

and the actual wording regarding the rear fog is:
"9. Fitted so that the reflector is facing squarely to the rear"

not quite "it must be vertical"? However, I had a bit of trouble with my rear fog light on the IVA test and I remember David saying it has to be vertical because a fog light diffuser lens is designed to give a straight beam which appears much brighter than the brakelights.

I can't help with your light plinth - mine were 95mm diam circular ones and I made all my rear lights some angled plinths out of some through-the-wall black plastic ducting. However, I'll post a pic because it might help someone else?

I got some grotty soft balsa wood and cut a wedge to the correct angle, glued it to the back of the fog lamp, carved it to shape the slapped on a load of body filler and sprayed it black.
Still on the car all these years later.

Square = at 90 degrees to. vertical = 90 degrees to horizon.

Pretty much the same!

Not quite - square to the rear could be interpreted as:

square (whilst looking from the side)
or square (whilst looking from above or below).

But, to remove any ambiguity I mentioned the testers comment about the straight beam - wouldn't want to mislead anyone.

Semantics.

Think you should be saying perpendicular to the road and square to the rear, Square IMO doesn't mean vertical, but I wont be arguing the point with the IVA man.
