Rivnuts
T66 - 30/3/12 at 07:48 PM

Im about to buy a batch, for panel fitting into the Fiats cage. The car is not going to get wet, do I buy steel nuts or stainless, how much of a difference do the stainless make with anti corrosion /longevity ?

Who offers the best value for money when purchasing please ?

Cheers

how many do you need mate. i have a few in the garage you could have foc if you want. they are the cerrated anti slip ones too. what size you after?

franky - 30/3/12 at 08:49 PM

Stainless ones are a complete pig due to the extra 'stiffness' of stainless steel.

fit them with a blob of silkaflex to form a watertight seal around the fitting, then a rubber washer under the bolt. Then you can get wet

can you get away with ally?
Much easier to fit.

Daniel,

Im just trying to buy in advance of impending work, so Im not really sure how many Im after. Was going to buy a batch of m5 & 6s.

Im old fashioned, so Im still struggling not putting nuts and washers on everything...

Can sharp arrange a few paypal beer tokens for you

Franky - I like the top tip ! Noted thanks

my riv-nut tool must be decent as all my rivnuts are stainless and its pulled them all easily.
also ivan a 6mm riv nut requires a large hole in the chassis. cant exactly remember but sure its 9.5 to 10 mm

I can remember doing mine in deepest winter and snapping about 4 of the insert tool bits

daniel mason - 30/3/12 at 09:25 PM

thats strange, ive not snapped any and i usually wreck stuff instantly. i will find out what my tool is and post up! ive gone through loads of drill bits, but no rivnut bits!

T66 - 30/3/12 at 09:26 PM

A 6mm needs a 9.1 mm hole, so seems big yes ! I only want to use them for removable panels, and lighter bits stuck on the spaceframe, anything needing robust will get a decent bracket tab with nut & bolt.

Are you suggesting a batch of say M5s or smaller ?

franky - 30/3/12 at 09:29 PM

for my removeable bits I used m4's as they only need a 6mm ish hole. Also it means you can get some nice discreet flat top allen head bolts too.

daniel mason - 30/3/12 at 09:38 PM

I'd agree with franky m4 or m5 will easily do the job! But am far from
An expert so wait for a few more replies before taking my advice.
I've ordered 50 x m5 and 50 m4's so should have some spares after doing tunnel top tomorrow

If using.... Stainless, Ally, or even Steel Rivnuts... I would put a dob of Copperease on each bolt before screwing it into the thread. You wont regret it.

You know it makes sense.

Aren't you going to take it out of the garage?
If using stainless I tend to find a nut on a set screw with a washer works just as well as a rivnut tool

Bapp bolt is close to me. The prices are always quite good. I a;ways pay about 2 quid for a selection of what i get

I moved from ally to steel after a few screws spalled in the ally rivnut, a real pita to get out
The steel rivnuts are no more difficult to set than ally, I used a Silverline setting tool, not broken any bits in 7 years.
I also use countersunk rivnuts with serrated edges, can't see them ever spinning in use, I get mine from Memfast.
