How many bolts holding scuttle with a windscreen
James - 5/7/12 at 04:13 PM

I currently have 3 M6 bolts holding each side of scuttle down to the chassis.

Obviously with a screen fitted there's quite a lot of wind resistance and it'll be pulling against these scuttle mounts.

I could easily go to 5 each side plus a strip of ali/steel holding it down if people think more than 3 is necessary.

Any recomendations?

Thanks!
James

Hi
Drill any more holes in the chassis & it will probably break in half.
2 with a steel 1/8" strip is enough.
Just get a strip of 1/8" steel the inside length drill 3 holes in it to sandwich the fibreglass.
Also make some aly plates to reinforce the fibreglass on the windscreen mountings
Good luck

Break in half! lol My chassis construction isn't that bad!

Anyway, I have an extra chassis rail welded on top of the normal ones to help clear the Pinto so the holes don't touch the main chassis!

I've got two each side ( 6mm into rivnuts ) plus about 8 of 4mm joining the scuttle front near-vertical panel to the horizontal panel above the footwells.
If that's not clear, I'll try to find a pic.

On my car the windscreen pillars are actually mounted on brackets (directly behind the scuttle) that are welded to the scuttle hoops, the fixing bolts for the pillars simply pass through drillings in the scuttle itself.

I figured this way the (considerable) wind forces would be passed directly onto the chassis, not trying to rip their way out of the scuttle - probably my usual 'belt & braces' engineering but has worked well so far.......
