Cycle Wings

I am making some "plugs" for Cycle Wings. The plan is to make them more size specific rather than a one size fits all. They will fit very close to the tyre. I am on with one for 175/185-60-13 but what are the other common tyre sizes you guys are running? All help greatly appreciated.

2p from me, snug is fine but having fitted some snug ones in the past getting the wheel on/off as to be taken into consideration, I personally think if you make 2 sizes, to suit the radius of 13&15 inch tyres you will on the right track, let the installer decide how close/snug to the wheel they fit.

Hi thanks for the advice, I may have a rethink
I have made the outer flange small (10mm) and the inner/ mounting one 30mm to make wheel removal easier. (pics in archive)

I would love to but it probably wouldn't be very beneficial for you as there aren't many GKDs on the road. I'm sure there would be plenty of westy or MK owners who would take you up on your offer.

Nice work Carbonman - I see you favour resin infusion - good choice!

You seem to have a lot of orange peel/matt print through visible on your plugs.... Is this before you have hand finished them? Are you using a barrier coat or tissue on the back of your gelcoat? Are these polyester parts (higher shrinkage)?

Hi thanks. Yes the pic was taken just after applying 5 heavy coats of clear. Still needs a good flat and polish

The plug is made up of

MDF Semi Circles skinned in Hardboard
Layer of 25mm Foam shaped to the approx shape
2 layers of CSM and 2 layers of tissue
Skimmed in Body Filler
5 heavy coats of 2k High Build Primer
Coat of 2K Base colour (what I had left over)
2K Clear

For the Mould I use an Epoxy compatible Tooling Gelcoat followed by a coupling layer of 80grm CSM and 4/5 layers of 400grm CSM.
The Mould is cured for 8 hours at 60 degrees and then post cured for 6-8 hours at 100 degrees

I only use Epoxy Resin for my actual parts and even my GRP parts are Infused not wet layed.

Are Composites your thing?

Managed to get the Mould done and the first GRP part Infused. (pics in archive)

The idea was to make some close fitting Cycle Wings that would be light but as stiff as possible.

The use of Resin Infusion, Epoxy Resin, E Glass and Core Reinforcement (Soric and Closed Cell Foam) in specific areas have resulted in a very stiff part that weighs just 435grms.

The outer lip is small (10mm) to aid wheel removal and the inner is 30mm, because of the reinforcement this can be used for mounting the wings eliminating the need for the "flat bar" under the arch.

Dimensions (inside) 210mm Wide
590mm Diameter
730mm Long

For anyone wanting something lighter a Carbon version should be ready for Stoneleigh.
