Seven Body Panels (Ali)
Tralfaz - 14/10/04 at 03:02 AM

Finally....... getting ready to start thinking about panelling the chassis.

Question is, what is generally used for:

Floor - ( I would prefer to use Ali over the Locost style welded in floor)

Sides -

Tunnel -

Gauge,Type,etc.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

I've used 1.5mm Ali fixed with PU adhesive and pop rivets every 50mm.
If building again I would probably stick to 1.5mm for the floor, but use 1.2mm for the rest as it would be slightly easier to cut and bend.

Thank You Nick.

Has no one else panelled their cars?

I cheated and used MK Fibreglass

I have used 2.6mm duralumin sheet (aluminium alloy - got it for beer) for the floor.
all other internal panels are in 1mm ally sheet.
the Avon has a grp body so I have no external paneling as such
All attached with structural blind rivets at 20-30mm (dependant on rivet size) spacing, in staggered rows and bonded with PU adhesive

Steel floor (1.6mm mild steel) and 1.2mm aluminium (5251-H22 alloy) for the bodywork. Easy enough to bend (just) and very resistant to dents.

I've used Polyflex PU adhesive and pop rivets every 50mm for the bodywork.

Cheers,
Craig.

poly urethane. aka sikaflex in its most common guise.

it's so good cos it sticks like the proverbial to the blanket

Yes and it doubles as a good sealant as well to keep the water and dirt out of your seams.

Cheers,
Craig.

If you go ali route, take a look at fixing both floor and sides in one go.

i.e. one rivet holding both floor and side panel if folded over.
