Gas Rams
Simon - 17/10/04 at 08:56 PM

Chaps,

My bonnet/nose is hinged at the front and I was thinking of using some rams to a) lift it; and b) hold it up

I got some Escort rams and reckon they're far too strong. Using bathroom scales, over 45kg (each) was required to compress them. That will push the bonnet off the front of the car!!

Any suggestions - ie weakening the rams I have or alternatives?

Thanks

Extra Weight ???? If you must have something, why not just have a normal bonnet stay. Or simply just dont bother.

Unless you are under there a lot or have something to show off ????

don't mess with them, they are under high pressure, they'll take your head off or worse if you try cut them open etc. I was told this by a friend who is a fireman - they are trained in how to deal with them when they learn how to cut people out of cars.

Just alter the angle at which they work.

The rams we use at work have a hexagon grub screw at the bottom where they fill them, you can also reduce the preasure with this screw by letting some air/oil out , not sure 'specific' parts would have the same adjustment though

Don't try to dismantle them, they'll take your head off. Like Mark says, alter the angle. It works like your front damper spring. You'll still have the initial pressure when they start to close so you'll need some reinforcing round the mounting points. 1=hard, 2=easier,3=easiest. Make sure they are fully extended when you have them in their open position. Rescued attachment bonnetprop.jpg

He has got a V8 in it ! Dont think the for speed build in lightness formula applys in this case more like the yankee AINT NO SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBIC INCHES.!
A the man says get your self a stay from a mondeo or similar. Simple and its not going to stress that panel when not in use.
otherwise me thinks you aligator will fold when you put it down.

Cheers chaps

I want to use them in conjunction with Mini bonnet catches - so when I pop the bonnet it opens, rather than have the bonnet permanently bent!

Mark - it doesn't matter which way I position them, I'll still have 90kilos of force acting on bonnet all the time

Ben - I can lose 5lb in three days just by going on a diet

Steve - will have a look at RS/Farnells sites to see what I can find!

Cheers again
