Aluminium Mesh for Bonnet Vents

Hello there,

I would like to fit some aluminium mesh vents in the body of my car, but would like to have the mesh bonded from the inside and stretched to sit flush with the outer surface of the fibreglass. Would the best way to do this be to cut a template to the shape of the vent from MDF and then press (or hammer) a smaller blank into the shape? Is it necessary to anneal the aluminium first?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, has anybody got any photos of this being done - or of the finished product?

Hi I have a full set (4) of the Westfield FW body work pre formed mesh vents - possibly not aluminium though let me know if your interested can send some pics.

That how I did mine, MDF cut out of the vent shape and a blank slightly smaller hammered into the mesh and then the sheet bonded into place. The only thing is to do one raised section at a time and then move onto the next to get the positioning correct.

It doesn't come out fully to the depth of the bodywork to make it flush but it does make it look neater than flush with the underside I think.

I used stainless mesh from Ford (as used on the < 2001 Mondeo front end) when I did my nosecone, and will probably use the same if/when I do any vents in the bonnet. It's a woven look, so not sure how well it'd take to being hammered/formed around a mould of any description??

I bought it from Ebay but it came from Poland, cheapest place I found even with postage

have a look in a local junk shop / antiques emporium or possibly charity shop, and see if they have any fireguards. and cut the mesh from that
