Does anyone know a source for stick-on number plates (ones that so many kit cars have on the bonnet, I assume to prevent them hitting the ground when
mounted at the bottom of the car)?

do a search in SVA section. This was discussed recently. I too was going to use stick on plate to cover some chips on nose cone edge. However
consensus of oppinion is that they are not legal and you risk getting pulled over.
Try a search of the DVLA website as well for legalities.

I have to admit, I had a suspicion it wouldn't be strictly legal but it is not for me and is for a friend of mine who is of 'senior'
years and wants one for his Triumph Spitfire (which he has recently had converted to a GT6) so I don't think he's too worried about the boys
in blue as they are highly unlikely to pay much attention to him!

I have a friend who has just finished a Fisher Fury and he has just sourced a stick on front number plate for his.
He got them from a local motor factors near where he works.
He lives near Oxford, so not too far away from you. I can find out where he got them from if you'd like ??

I bought mine from Wilco motor spares , it had a disclaimer on the back of the plate not for road use.

while we are on the subject are PAINTED number plates illegal? for instance if instand of a plate you painted the number onto a white background using correct size and spacing directly onto the car.
Painted numbers directly on the car don't meet the regs:

Thinking about it, I think I have seen stick-on number plates on cars in France, so maybe if you were over there you could go to the equivalent of Halfords and get some made up...
