I'm just looking at the panneling for the footwells. What sort of thickness have people gone for in this area? Bearing in mind it's potentially supporting bits of the pedal box and stuff?

Also, would double skinning help much with keeping the heat away/making a firewall or is this not worth the effort?

I've done sheet steel, the same stuff as I am using on the floor (1.6mm?)
Along the transmission side of the foot well I am using 1.2mm aluminium

As for heat shielding, I can't be sure this is enough. For me the passenger footwell is directly next to the manifold. If the heat is too great I would wrap the manifild in insulation rather than re-design / plate the foot well.

James, made mine out of 2mm steel, cause it was around.

Having bolted my master cylinders in place there's very little flex to be had, granted I haven't stuck the pedals on to increase the leverage.

Side panels are the same 1.6mm ali as the bodywork.

I didnt bother with a double skin as i dont feel its needed and its extra weight.

My pedal brackets are welded to the chassis so its no problem for me.


Just remember that for everything you fit thats not needed you slow your car down and it also costs money.
Think "would you pay to have a slower car"

I spoke to Merlin last night; he's used 3mm plate for his and reckoned he could see it moving quite substantially when the inspector was pressing the pedal.

Presumably there's room to fit a bracing tube across the plate? Do you think using 1.6mm plate with a 19mm tube across the middle would be good enough?

My pedals & cylinder live in a box made of 3mm sheet - and I could see it move when my son put some pressure on the pedal! As it happens, I had to put some spacers to get the pedal action right, so I made these out of 2 bits of 10mm ali plate.

This isn't as bad as it sounds, as they're quite discrete - I'll post a picture, if people are interested.

This'll also keep the Hippy happy, as he asked me ages ago for a piccy of my pedal box. Must keep the Hippy happy, as there's nothing worse than an unhappy Hippy!

Done it - look in my photo section for "pedal*.jpg" - don't expect too much as I was photographing a piece of kit painted semi-matt black using a crummy flash on my digital camera!

Still, it shows the reinforcing spacers, plus the general arrangement.
