Bulge or scoop for ali bonnet?
Humbug - 29/5/06 at 10:06 PM

Just finished making an ali bonnet... ratchet method for shaping marked the radius points put didn't bend it enough, so SWMBO and I bent it round a nearby lamppost.

Manifold cutout was cut with tin snips then the edge hammered over to make a radiused edge.

I may put trim on the front and rear edges, but the main thing left to do is to cover up the hole where the engine pokes through.

My current thinking on options are:

1. make an ali scoop to just cover the engine and leave it open at the front. I tried with a piece of scrap ali and the problem seems to be in bending it accurately and neatly enough, so any ideas on shape, and/or ideal techniques?

2. find a ready made one in ali, f/g or ABS... does anyone know of anything suitable? Dimensions are approx. 20cm wide x 40cm long x 3cm high (at the front)

Cheers

There's plenty on Ebay and Car Builder Solutions have some for a £10.00 (scoops)

They do get quite hot - so would def have something to drag the air in - quite high volume too

How about a combination of scoop and bulge like a Nissan GTI-R bulge?

Do you mean like this?

I got that from Redline Components, who sell spares for old Caterhams. The scoop was made out of grotty grey GRP and needed some work to bring it up to a good finish. Not stupidly expensive, I recall.

cheers,
David

David - that might work. When you have a moment could you measure it? The hole in my bonnet is 17cm x 39cm - not sure from your pic whether the curving sides of the scoop would actually cover the hole.

Cheers
