ghetto_eddie - 12/8/06 at 03:53 PM

hi guys, ime looking to do a locost style cobra daytona.
ime cool with making my own chassis/running gear based on locost principals.. but i dont know where to source a fibreglass shell from.

does anyone have any links or info that could lead me in the right direction? ime looking for the coupe daytona version.(not the oh-so common roadsters)

thanks in advance

Hawk cars are also doing one, not being sold yet IIRC.

It's not on their website yet, but their phone number will be - http://www.hawkcars.co.uk

Doubt either option will be locost in the sense of little cash. BAD's 'basic' body kit is £8k !!!

There aren't any others in the UK, at least none on http://www.totalkitcar.com/tkc_article_120.php

i love the shape of the daytona, if you were at the london motor show you would have seen one of the 6 originals.

The scratch built one is amazing i would personally hold it in as high regard as with the originals....

it seems daytona bodys are very very thin on the ground.

i would absolutely love to make an alu one myself. but i dont think ime anywhere close to the patience i would need to fab that much bodywork!

every single company i have tried to contact hasnt contacted me back, so ive seen no other prices other than the 8k bad quote.
i also looked into gt40's on a similar plan (albeit not quite so passionately) and found quite easily a company selling a body for about 3.5k, still alot i know, but i reckon i could get that quite a bit lower.

just popped into my head to do something similar to that alu body, but instead use fibreglass?
it would obviously take a very long time, but providing i could actually construct a "buck" (as he calls it) i could construct my own plug around that using various materials, use it to make a mould, and i could rattle off a few to cover my costs!

(ime thinking VERY long term project here..)

oppinions?

it seems a new idea has just formed!

ime just trying to hunt down a decent scale model (hoping for a 1:10 to simplify it a bit more...)

as a bonus too, whilst ime at university, i cant do any work on my mini in the garage (de-seamed...sick of the thing, cant wait to finish it!...hate rust with such a passion!) so i have a LOAD of free time, which arguably i should spend on my university work....but ime pretty sure i can fob this off as a project (ime now getting through my years doing automotive engineering)
ime going to have a read about methods of construction and do some more research, (and do alot of staring at my model aston db4 zagato on my desk for ideas...seeing as its my favourite pastime at the moment)
Fred: would you mind if i asked you a few more detailed questions about your method ? wont be for a while mind...

after re-reading the all aluminium daytona's site again, ime wondering about windscreens.
just incase anyone knows (and i assume i know the answer, but i can but try!)
- are cobra roadster windscreens the same as the daytona's?
ime going to flog that one around a few cobra based forums and see what they say, or even if theres a quite close windscreen from a donor.

cheers for the guidance all

hmm, a development (already!)

ive just recieved an email from chuck, the talented fella who made the alu replica!

He is willing to supply drawings for a buck (at a fee!).
may be possible to avoid all the bother of measuring a model, providing the cost is right!.

keep you all updated!
