...the 'Broken Cycle Mudguard Club' that is!

I was zooming home from town this evening, when I heard an unusual rattling noise - quite a trick when you consider how noisy my car is - and when I looked around I could see my nearside mudguard flapping way more than it usually does. Managed to get home without it flying off.

One stay had snapped right above the hole for the mounting bolt - a stress-raiser, I'd guess - and a weld had failed on the cross-brace (my fault, that one). I'm not sure if the broken weld started the fracture, or vice-versa. The stays on the other mudguard are showing no signs of cracking, so maybe the failed weld led to the fracture.

Ah well, at least I got it home in one piece - just need to weld it back together again...

WHY is it always the n/s wing

My n/s wing stay has broken 3 times now. Making some heavyweight items.

Funny you should mention about the rougher road surface on the N/S. Just what I was thinking on my last drive out.

My supplied stay also kept breaking on the N/S till I changed the design.

also only had a n/s failure very strange

Mine was the off side wing (2005)........(just to be different).....but then hitting a pot hole at speed.....didn't help....

Took the opportunity to get some new wrap-around wings from MNR, and design a completely new style wing stay and fixing method.....

Two years on from the BCMC initiation and all is well....so far!

I have both sides break but twice on the near side. I am now looking for a better design. Any suggestions? standard cortina set up, a drawing would be good

I hope to have some MNR ones fitted ( when i change from sierra uprights to 'tina one's ) I will be fitting the MNR Ones. But it requires access to 30k's worth of tube bender so not really a home build job.

As a more general thing I've noticed wear on the n/s first on items I've recently had to replace on my tintop - lower wishbone bushes, balljoints, tre's for example. The n/s is bumpier, usually subsidence by the kerb, potholes, drains and sometimes manholes being on the kerbside is my suspicion.

Shame it broke on the way to the Cheshire show a few years back and then a photo of my car appeared in 'which Kit' with the missing cycle wing - great eh!

had to take this photo oportunity when i stopped off en route to meet the other lads in the garden centre car park though.

There are none above mine

The problem is that the mudguards are quite heavy, but can only be supported on one side by quite narrow bars. I'd guess that the only sure solution is to fit clamshell wings - but I don't like them.

BROKE both sides many of times but n/s more
