aluminuium for dash
02GF74 - 2/8/07 at 08:57 AM

is 1.6 mm a good enough thickness for a dash?

there is a frame behind it and I may glue some right angle behind to stiffen it.

Also about the lower radius - (not needed as am registered) but for safety reason - thinking of riveting on a piece of tube then bending the lower edge round it - either remove the tube or leave it.

Comments/suggestions?

try and get some ally that has been engine turned, plain ally can be a pain in the ass with the sun reflecting off it.

i'd have thought engine turned ally would be even more dazzling, though i don't speak from experience.

i'd get it anodised, black

I have 1.6 ally for my dash. I curved the bottom edge with a rubber mallet over a 38mm tube and that stiffened it beautifully until I lunched out the bit to miss the steering column cover!

I rubbed mine down with a medium scotchbrite pad carefully running straight along the line of the dash which gave it a nice matt brushed ally effect but this has taken a few marks from pulling it in and out of the car while wiring. I think I will glue a vinyl cover on it to match the rest of the interior when i am done fiddling! I will also put an edging strip on the back side of the curve for SVA and a bit of angle across the cut out for the steering column covers .

I assume you will need to put a coat of something on the aluminium to stop it from oxidising so you could always use a matt varnish to take off the shine.

so sounds like a plan; I wold be painting it black or more likely covering it vinyl.

I use 1,6, with no problems, vinyl or leather.
