Paint no longer available?!?
donut - 9/1/08 at 10:11 AM

Was talking to a body shop painter yesterday and he was talking about having problems getting paint. It seems that the industry is in limbo at the moment. 2 pack is now illegal [i think] from end of Dec07, Water based paint need a clear coat which is still being developed. He had real trouble getting midnight blue for an MG he was respraying and it cost allot more than it did 2 months ago.

Does this mean the demise of independent back street sprayers?

Anyone else heard anything?

use wax crayons!

when I asked Mr. Paint, my local paint supplier ( that is not his real name but what I calls him) about the demise of cellulose he said it is still avaialbe for the home builder but not for commercial users. There seemed to be no problem in me getting my orange paint.

why did your bloke have trouble getting paint? It is mixed up on premises.

2K and 2pac are being phased out due to the solvents they use. Cellulose is supposed to only be available for "historic" vehicles but there aren't IIRC regulations stating that the shops actually have to do much to ensure that that's what it's being used for.....

Water based paints are the replacements. Some people recommend a clear coat on top to make sure the pigments don't run if the surface gets chipped (ie if water gets to the water-soluable bits). However, a lot of people reckon it's not needed with the more recent paints...

2 Pack or whatever is suposed to be replaced with water based paint which is non toxic however the clear coat that has to go on top is toxic but they say it still cuts the toxic's by half or more.

My mate had trouble because everyone is stocking up on the 2 pack. Regs state that 2 pack is no longer to be sold to trade from end 2007. Dunno about public though.

I still get cellulose no trouble, and thinners for it which also gets used for cleaning. It says for professional use only on it so I'm a professional now.

I bought paint before christmas because id read this was going to be happening. The government legislation is still out to consultation according to the DTi web page.

I bought paint from www.jawel.co.uk who told me at the time their still buying paint and untill officialy told they cant sell it / buy it they will be selling it. The bloke i spoke to though it would be quite a while yet.

it means for any back street bodyshop that dont have a dedicated booth , they have to have one , since water based only dries on movement of air with no catalyst . It surely has repercussions with the Smart repairs etc .

Did I also read somewhere that car manufactures have an exemption from this until goodness knows when?

If so then as per usual its one rule for the big guys and screw the little guys.

The 80/20 rule in reverse, target the small users who have a limited impact, and let those that create the most problems carry on.

Clearcoats are not just recommended, they are essential! The water bourne paints are non convertible water soluble which means they stay water soluble and it is only the (2k) clear which prevents the rain washing it all off. The wet mixed paint is not the same colour as the dried applied paint so colour matching is a case of using sprayout cards and comparing the results.

Cellulose is still available to 'registered classic car restorers'

Synthetic should now be unobtainable.

2k cannot be used by bodyshops with a VOC of more than 500kgs, but is still available to licenced small bodyshops. I was never supposed to be available to the general public (although we all know it was)

Waterbourne is unuseable unless you have £80,000 of low bake spray booth.

Hope this clears it up a bit
