Guess the weight

Just had a 'rough' weighing session on my just completed Striker.

This is only a first try and my platforms need tweaking to get perfectly level but its a starting point (and confirms my left/right balance is out a bit which is really what I wanted to know).

Without me in it I got 526Kg and with me 608Kg. Two different sets of bathroom scales show me as 80Kg so I don't doubt the 526 is that far out.

Quite pleased with that, same weight as my old live axle Striker but should be about 50% more power once tuned

Thts seems good. Mine was about 540kg , 620kg inc me.

That is with half a tank of fuel and at Procomp.

Have you got anything special on your striker to reduce the weight?

I did watch the weight on a few things.

Carbon front wings, transmission tunnel and front bulkhead panels all weigh about half the original GRP/aluminium parts as did the carbon mirrors. Hi-spec calipers on the back saved quite a bit over the sierra with Wilwoods on the front. I changed the 14" wheels/tyres that came with the kit for 13" Pro Race with Toyo 888 tyres and that saved 8 and a bit Kg in one go!

Battery is about 1.5Kg (lithium job), whats a sealed lead battery? maybe 5-8kg? The shocks have been changed from the originally supplied steel spax units to alloy Protech units which must save a little more.

Its a 'new' scuttle design so no windscreen which also saves a couple more Kg (plus no wiper motor). LED lights (other than headlights) has allowed me to run minimum wire sizes.

The diff has been rebuilt with Quaife internals which added a bit more back onto the build and I do still have half doors to cut and fit and a rear diffuser to play with over the winter so it will creep up a little more by next year.

The gearbox also seems very heavy (BGH modified, I think only 4th is standard now!) so I could go for alloy case to save more weight there but not right now, the piggy bank is empty for this year

Only other obvious (to me) possible weight saving for the future is maybe solid front disks and the silencer is huge (and heavy) so if track day noise limits where not a possible issue I could reduce the size of that by 50%!

You have to target 500kg and lose some weight from the car.

- Lighter rims and tyres
- Lighter bodywork
- Lighter (and more powerful) brake calipers
- Lighter seats

Not meant to be rude in any way at all, but what about a diet. I know from personal experience losing weight helped me reduce the overall weight of me + my bike. Eating less (and a bit more exercise) is also cheaper than paying out to upgrade parts.

Sort of just answered some of that. Can't save much more on the wheels, maybe 1/2kg per corner but at what cost?

Could go for carbon bodywork and possibly will mess around with some myself in the future (as I have said before I have an itch to scratch on making some carbon bits, maybe doors, bonnet and nosecone).

Brakes already as light as sensible money will allow other than a switch from vented to solid disks on the front (the kit came with vented, not sure I would have chosen them myself).

The seats are 3.5Kg each. I could change to Tillett B3.5 which with fasteners will cost about £1k....and save about 3.4Kg. The B3.5 are very flimsy and would need extra support brackets so that would push the weight back up a little.

Nothing rude about that however I'm 189cm tall (6"2.5' in old money) and 80Kg dressed. I am actually down on weight from this time last year (83Kg) due to not cycling since Christmas as all my spare time has gone on car building (other than 2 hours crossfit every week) My upper legs are noticeably smaller (to me and the wife) and will go up in size and weight when I get back on the bike in a couple of weeks time

What upright did you use Peter?
Personally I can say that the ones I had in my Fury were quite heavy.

With those alloy Upright I saved a lot, At a price I still think reasonable, considering the weight saved.

Sierra uprights and yes they are heavy. I would consider alloy but have heard of some breaking which has put me off a little.

Handbrake lever works well and several people have commented on how good it looks

How is progress on your car Samuele?

I also heard of a breaking.
But it was not the aluminum part.
But the iron arm, which was welded.
Now this arm version does not sell it anymore.
These upright are for cars with a maximum weight of 750kg.
Theoretically with 600kg there should be no risk.
Anyway, I agree with you, less weight and always better.
With the Fury the work proceeds. I made drastic changes,
As from live axle to IRS, which cost me much more time than expected
I hope it's worth it ...
