Cycle wing stays

Hi there..

im at the final stage of the build... made my cycle wing stays by the book.. great but all for one little problem, the top ball joint thread is not long enough to go through the cortina hub and stay, ive got transit track rods as ball joints as the book, even with out the stay the threads are only just long enough to reach the nylock in the nut through the hub.

has any one had this problem??? is there a ball joint / track rod end which has a longer thread??

thourght of cutting the nut in half to all ow the nylock to work but dont fancy the nut fracturing, its gona hurt!!

so far in remaking them to fix to the steering track rod bolt and as the book the bottom caliper bolt but that makes the wing a bit unstable!!

Any idea if you have had the same problem!???

cheers

a fed up rob!!

hey up.

had thourght about a 1/2 nut but was a bit conserned that would only leave 1/2 the ammount of threads to tighten up to and that with vibrations etc the threads may go??

what did you do??

cheers

If you can find someone to do it the best way is to machine three or four mm of the face of the upright.I used a horizontal milling machine and set up and milled the face using a cutter ground to leave a small radius at the corner.

Or remake the wing stays to utilise the old dust shield mounting holes.......

Dont just build it.....make it!

I simply filed about 2mm off the back of the nylocs and it was just enough for the thread to peak thru the nyloc. You have to fit nut covers over these anyway and the SVA inspector never removed any Nut cover on my SVA

Problem solved...

in a attempt to seat the taper on the ball joint i got a bit excited with my 600mm tommy bar.... striped the threads off the top joint... doh you may think!! the new transit track rod end that i got has longer threads that pass through the wing stay and reach the nyloc!! bonus!!

cheers for the advice

bob

Found this myself had 2 track rod ends from the same supplier and one had a narrower taper and longer thread length than the other.
Cheers,
Bob
